Social Wall
Added a Social Wall
Running my website off a self hosted WordPress install, I bought Social Stream by DesignChemical. Social Stream is a plugin for WordPress that adds an interactive social wall to a website. What it does is letting you decide which social networks you want to stream by showing those on a predefined page on your website. Or in a sidebar widget on a random page.
At the moment there’s support for the following networks:
Google+, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vimeo, YouTube, Instagram, Delicious, Rss, Flickr, Last.FM, Dribbble,
StumbleUpon and DeviantArtI bought my copy through Codecanyon, which is an integral part of Themeforest You can even login at Codecanyon by using your Themeforest account if you happen to own one.
After buying and downloading the plugin
the first thing you’ll need to do is installing it inside the plugin directory of WordPress. The easiest way to do this is going to [Plugins] and by choosing [Add New]. This will take you to the screen below.
Choose [Upload] and look for the folder on your hard drive, where you saved the Social Stream plugin. Notice that every download from Codecanyon (and Themeforest too) is in a .zip format. That sometimes means you have to extract the file somewhere on your hard drive, before using it. (some zip-files contain a manual and some other files) But in this case, just upload the file and you’re good to go. Once installed go back to the [Plugins] menu in the dashboard. There you’ll find [Installed plugins]. Search for [Wordpress Social Stream] and choose [Activate].
This is where the fun starts!
Choosing your Social Networks
The configuration panel is empty by default. So naturally the first step is to fill in your credentials after which you get to choose the settings for your stream. The screenshot below shows the Twitter stream.
Although everything here seems pretty self-explanatory, I noticed that switching on the [show images] option, did not automatically show my older images on the wall. This is not a shortcoming of the plugin but rather a move that Twitter recently made, to exclude third-party image hosting providers like Mobypicture, Twitpic, etc. Looking at the shortened url from Twitter, it now shows http://pic.twitter.com instead. Because of this, every Tweet I sent with Tweetbot (I own an iPhone) generated an error. When used with the official Twitter app for iOS, everything works just fine….
There are two ways
to set up a stream. The first is to add a new stream and merge every other stream with it. This is how I did it. Give your stream a name (I named it ‘Social’) and after that, click on each and every social network icon, fill in your credentials and make sure to choose [Update Stream]. Not doing this results in going all over it again. The advantage of putting every social network inside one stream is, to have just one page that shows all of your social networks as a wall. (like the first screenshot above). Do not worry about how this works on mobile devices as this plugin adapts itself to width and height automatically. (yes, it’s responsive) For some themes it is necessary to add some extra (css) code to make it work completely. But this is not a problem. Inside the plugin admin screen, there’s an option to add css by simply copying and pasting. The Dev is a very friendly guy and acts swiftly to any problem you may have.
The other way to add a stream is by choosing [New Stream] for every social network seperately. So you basically end up with a Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc. stream. Then you can copy and paste the (stream) code on any page or inside any post. It’s a little more flexible this way, but I do not like it. Having a Twitter stream with this option, enables automatic scrolling (up or down). Reading tweets this way is very taxing for your eyes, I tell you. (but maybe it depends on whether you have a Samsung Galaxy 4 or not. That phone supposedly detects if you’re watching the screen)
Finally, there’s the [Settings] panel. Here you can change whether your stream has a limit on the number of items to show. Here I chose to limit the stream to 4 items. (applies to all streams) The other option is to select [Days]. If you choose [Date] for [Order], you limit the number of items to a certain date. So if you sent your tweet let’s say ten days ago, it might not show up in your stream! [Random] shows a visitor a new item, everytime he or she visits your site or you hit the F5 button. (refresh) Height control is very essential to how your items show up on your wall. So a bit of experimenting there.
Intentionally I chose to show the ‘Twitter API Credentials – Required For All Twitter Feeds‘. Right below this text (not shown here) are some fields that need attention. Because of recent Twitter policy changes, you need to authorize an application for authentication purposes. You can find the tech stuff here Just sign in with your Twitter credentials and create an app.
After you registered an (authenticated) application with Twitter, you can use this application for many purposes as there are many other applications that rely on this (0Auth-)principle. Remember those (Twitter or Facebook) pop-ups that ask you about if you want the app to post in your name and to have access to your contacts ? Now you know why..
Twitter wants to make sure you are who you say you are…
Personally I really love this plugin! But for those who are looking for a more convenient way to slipstream their social network into their site, here’s another contender
Any comments are welcome!

Now that would really be something! If Google could pull that one off, it would be a killer feature! Now if they’d only opened their API to developers, then this could be made possible on let’s say, WordPress.
I second this motion….;)
